Profile of Father Arturo Sosa

Fr. Arturo Sosa, of Venezuela, as Superior General of the Society of Jesus.

  • 1948/ He was born in Caracas, Venezuela on November 12.
  • 1966/ He entered the Society of Jesus on September, 14.
  • 1972/ He obtained a licentiate in Philosophy from the Catholic University Andrés Bello.
  • 1977/ He was ordained on July, 30.
  • 1978-1996/ He was the Province Coordinator for the Social Apostolate and Director of the Gumilla Social Center, a center for research and social action for the Jesuits in Venezuela.
  • 1990/ He obtained a doctorate in Political Science from the Central University of Venezuela.
  • 1996-2004/ He was Provincial of the Jesuits in Venezuela.
  • 2004/ He was Rector of the Catholic University of Táchira for 10 years. He dedicated a large part of his life to research and teaching and has held different positions in academia. He has also been a professor and member of the Council of the Andrés Bello Catholic Foundation. He has pursued research and teaching in the field of political science, in various centers and institutions. He published many works, in particular on Venezuela’s history and politics.
  • 2008/ During General Congregation 35, Father General Adolfo Nicolás appointed him as General Counsellor, based in Venezuela.
  • 2014/ He joined the General Curia community and took on the role of Delegate for Interprovincial Roman Houses of the Society of Jesus in Rome, which include the Pontifical Gregorian University, the Pontifical Biblical Institute, the Pontifical Oriental Institute, the Vatican Observatory, Civiltà Cattolica, as well as international Jesuit colleges in Rome.
